Humectants and emollients are two different types of skin-care ingredients that help improve skin hydration, but they work in different ways.

  1. Humectants

Function: Attract and bind water from the environment or deeper skin layers into the outer skin layer (stratum corneum).
How they work: They’re water-loving (hydrophilic) molecules that pull moisture into the skin.
Examples:

Glycerin

Hyaluronic acid

Sorbitol

Panthenol

Urea

Best for:

Dry, dehydrated skin

Improving skin plumpness

Layering under moisturizers for better effect

  1. Emollients

Function: Smooth and soften the skin by filling in spaces between skin cells with lipids or oils.
How they work: They create a smoother skin surface and reduce roughness by adding flexibility and suppleness.
Examples:

Shea butter

Jojoba oil

Mineral oil

Squalane

Fatty acids (oleic, linoleic acid)

Best for:

Rough, flaky skin

Improving skin texture

Soothing irritation

💡 Tip: In a good moisturizer, humectants draw in water, emollients smooth the skin, and occlusives (like petroleum jelly) lock the moisture in.
