Understanding Warts and Where They Appear on the Body

Warts are small, rough, benign (non-cancerous) skin growths caused by certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). Although they are harmless, they can be distressing both cosmetically and physically, depending on where they develop. Warts are contagious and spread through direct contact with an infected person or surface, especially when the skin barrier is broken.

How Warts Develop

The HPV virus penetrates the top layer of the skin, usually through tiny cuts or abrasions. Once inside, it triggers rapid cell growth, leading to the formation of a wart. Their appearance can vary, and some are flat and smooth, while others are raised, rough, or even cauliflower-like in texture. Warts are more common in people with weakened immune systems, children, and those who frequently touch communal surfaces.

Types of Warts and Their Common Locations

  1. Common Warts (Verruca Vulgaris)
These are rough, raised growths with a grainy surface, often found on the hands, fingers, knuckles, and around the nails. They are the most typical form and can sometimes develop black dots small clotted blood vessels inside them.
  2. Plantar Warts (Verruca Plantaris)
These occur on the soles of the feet, particularly on pressure points like the heels or balls of the feet. They tend to grow inward due to body weight and can cause discomfort while walking.
  3. Flat Warts (Verruca Plana)
These are smooth, flat-topped, and slightly raised lesions that can appear in clusters on the face, neck, arms, and legs. They are more common in children and teenagers.
  4. Filiform Warts
These warts have a thin, thread-like projection and are often found on the face especially around the eyes, nose, and mouth. They tend to grow quickly and can be easily irritated during shaving or facial care.
  5. Genital Warts (Condyloma Acuminata)
Caused by specific HPV strains, these appear in the genital and anal areas. They are sexually transmitted and require medical evaluation and treatment.
  6. Periungual and Subungual Warts
These develop around or under the nails, causing discomfort and sometimes deforming the nail structure. They can be difficult to treat due to their location.

Treatment and Professional Care

While some warts may disappear on their own, many persist and require professional intervention. Dermatological treatments include cryotherapy (freezing), laser therapy, electrocautery, chemical peels, or topical antiviral medications.

At Emil Spa and Beauty Haven, advanced skin-care solutions and safe, effective wart-removal procedures are provided under professional supervision. The goal is to restore smooth, healthy skin while preventing recurrence and ensuring your comfort.
