Keratosis pilaris
Keratosis pilaris(often called “chicken skin”) is a common, harmless skin condition where tiny, rough bumps appear—often on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks.
What causes it:
The bumps happen when keratin (a natural protein in the skin) builds up and blocks hair follicles. The exact cause isn’t fully understood, but it’s more common in people with dry skin, eczema, or a family history of the condition.
How it looks:
Small, hard bumps that may be red, white, or skin-colored.Skin may feel rough or “sandpaper-like.”Usually not itchy or painful, but sometimes can be mildly irritated.
Who gets it:
Very common in children and teenagers; often improves with age.Affects both men and women, but tends to be more noticeable on lighter skin tones.
Treatment:
There’s no permanent cure, but it can be managed.
Focus is on softening skin and unclogging pores:Moisturizers with urea, lactic acid, or glycolic acid to exfoliate gently.Gentle exfoliation (avoid harsh scrubbing—it can worsen irritation).Warm, not hot, showers to avoid drying skin.Mild cleansers instead of harsh soaps.Consistency is key—bumps can return if you stop treatment.
